Is your workout as effective as it can be?

We are several weeks into the New Year and you have been going to the gym faithfully every day.  You started out gung ho and now you are getting bored with your routine.  You dropped a couple pounds and you are not noticing anymore coming off.  What is going on?  There are a few things you can do make your workout more effective and see results longer than a couple weeks.

Here are some tips:

  • Enjoy your time at the gym.  Find activities that are fun and push you beyond…

Are you doing the same things yet expecting different results?

For some of us, that means jumping on the treadmill or elliptical, sweating for an hour and calling it a day.  Why don’t we see the results we expect?  Possibly because the workout routine may be missing one key ingredient and that is muscle development.

Do you think you could take your workout to another level just by combining that cardio component with some strength training exercises?  Absolutely!

We live in a fast paced world and it’s often difficult to…

The Inclinathon

Well, I originally planned to sit on this idea for a while, thinking perhaps that the infinite wisdom of time would convince me of my absurdity and foolishness so that I may once again live in peace.  But Thursday morning, after a relatively sleepless night, I awoke with a vision that continues to haunt me.  And so, with no other choice now but to share what I have to share, I sincerely hope that doing so will relieve some of my angst.

Let me preface what I'm about…

Peer pressure, or coincidence??

When we moved to Colorado about 4 1/2 years ago, we had been working as a family to try and be more healthy.  My wife and I have always struggled with our weight for all of our lives, and we had slowly been working towards trying to eat better, exercise etc.…

Ponderous Posterior: The Fat Ass 50k Finale

Saturday was the 2nd annual Ponderous Posterior: the culminating event of Colorado's Fat Ass 50k Series (three off-season trail runs with earlier gatherings in Boulder and Fort Collins). The defining (and best) feature of these "races" is the absence of entry fees, age group categories, formal awards, or any semblance of a race lottery. Instead, just an abundance of great trails and an opportunity for some friendly competition with some of the best runners in…

I am a trail runner..

Today I ran the first of 4 races in the Pikes Peak Road Runners Winter Series.  I entered the short series, which included today's 3.3M run, and to be followed by a 4M, 5M, and 10K spaced out two weeks apart.

The course this morning was at Cheyenne Mountain State Park,  and it was a great…

Ask the Coach - If you don't snooze, do you lose?

What is the influence of sleep on your performance, how important is it? Hormones, Recup, energy etc! - Jean (@Mambaa24)

Since endurance sports are increasing in popularity, it is very common for athletes to work full-time jobs, have a family, and try to get in 10-20 hours of training a week. Add in some social commitments and we have a very full day. What gets…

Pikes Peak in January

January 7th 2012: one down, eleven to go. After nearly 6 hours of time on feet, I discovered that running Pikes every month may be more difficult than I initially thought. While it's clear I left my 14,000 ft legs and lungs in 2011 and my pace left much to be desired (especially after last August's performance), it's not the conditioning that worries me. No, I think…

Ask the Coach - Tune-up for Boston?

Chuck (@chuckfeerick) will be racing the Boston marathon and asked if he should do a tune-up marathon before Boston. The 2012 Boston marathontakes place on Monday, April 16th, so we are looking at about 3.5 months from now or about 15 weeks. I am going to have to make some assumptions right now because I don’t know where Chuck is in his training plan. But let’s say
  • Chuck is just coming off his off-season
  • Chuck will want to treat Boston as…

Resolutions

Last year will be tough to beat. I'm sure I've said that before but 2011, marked by meeting an amazing collection of running friends, some real solid races with even more memorable training runs, and ousting JT as the unofficial Cherry Picker of the Year, has been unforgettable. But the generous period of…

Viva VIVOBAREFOOT! Neo Trail Review

As you know, I have spent a bit of time researching a good cold weather, minimalist trail shoe for those times (like now) that I am not able to run in my huaraches.  After a lot of research and agonizing, I decided on the VIVOBAREFOOT Neo Trails.  Well, they arrived yesterday, and I've never been more excited about getting new shoes! And my wife reminded me of the "new shoes" song (which is posted below)…

Ask the Coach - You pull your motivation from where?

I made a quick post on my personal facebook page about finishing a spin. One of my friends replied:

I've taken ten or so long breaks from exercise since I have known you and you've taken maybe one day off. How the heck do you stay so motivated!?

Instead of writing…

Woodmen Hill

Woodmen Hill west of I-25. Last July, my attempt to run up the SOB depleted every energy in my body, thus leaving me in submission under a pine tree in a person's yard. I couldn't continue. Luckily I had a phone with me to call a ride. Today was my day to settle the score with the old nemesis, and that I did. My method of attack was to shoot for various targets along the stretch (streetlights, trees, mailboxes, etc.) a few hundred yards away. I used that target shooting strategy until I made…

Shop Local, Run Local

For those of you that have been following along, you know that I am a bit addicted to climbing the Manitou Incline, followed by a run down the Barr Trail.  I run it 2 or 3 times per week, and its around a 30 mile round trip drive up and down Ute Pass to get there.

For a change of pace, I decided to stick around home, but get a good trail run in today since it was so beautiful. Believe it or not, a really…
