Prior to Saturday, my last real running race, was 7 months ago. With some help from Dr. Jeff Matthews, the Achilles had been responding well and allowing me to increase my training provided that I spend just as much effort focused on recovery. With less than 70 days until Western States, my decision was this:
A) Try a 50 mile tune up now, with the risk of being undertrained, but having more time to…

Ok Tim, so it’s a little late BUT the last time I wrote a blog about a marathon I DNF’d. Naturally I’m a bit reluctant to do that again but a promise is a promise so here goes nothing…
Bound and determined to write something about running that one if not both of my brothers would read I asked each of them to name their three most favorite things. One said girls, hot girls and mayonnaise and the other said good chocolate, good beer, family visiting in Nicalandia, good food and…

"We just passed the 100 days to go mark!" That's what I read when I opened up the most recent runner update email for the Western States Endurance Run. There are actually 89 days and counting now as I write this. Perhaps it's time to start panicking!
A stubborn left Achilles and right hamstring haven't let me train like I'd hoped. Lately, I can't help but wonder how I will be able to survive a 100 mile race. My…

March 13 is upon us - the big registration day Colorado! Register for the Pikes Peak Marathon (PPM) or the Ascent, whichever form of self torture you prefer. For me, I've got my sight set on the marathon this year. With just one other marathon behind me (the fantastic Big Sur International…

Two of the bucket lists I’m working on as I stumble through life are the 50 states marathon thing and the 49 state highpoints. I realize there are actually 50 state highpoints, but I read too much about folks losing fingers or feet or their life up in Alaska so I’ve decided to skip The Last Frontier. Anywho, a few years ago I read about a race called the Mt.…

Quirkiness, creativity, and determination are traits that I admire. They are attributes that inspire me and, more often than not, they tend to go hand in hand when it comes to feats of endurance. Of all of the unique endeavors, the Terry Fox story is probably my favorite.
And anyone who has…

As I MTB or ride my stationary or run almost every day, and while I was on Falcon Trail riding once again, I devised a new way to track my rides other than number of days or exact miles that I have ridden. I decided that I will compare my riding to real world goals... As I ride a single speed MTB, my distances will be far shorter than those capable by any geared bike or by any road bike. Basically, the fastest I can ride on level ground is 21mph, and that is with my feet spinning like they…

"Last year will be tough to beat." That's how last year's resolution blog began, referring to 2011, and the same story rings true for 2012. Aside from the Burro racing thing and missing out on QuadRock due to an ankle sprain, I nailed everything on my list of "want-to-dos" and managed a couple of "never-thought-of-that-but-I'm-glad-I-did-its" as well.
…

My 2013 running schedule was laid out recently when I was (un)lucky enough to have my name pulled in the Hardrock lottery. I’ve been picked five out of six times now and have become the subject of various conspiracy theories on how I continue to beat the ever increasing odds of running that race. I’ll never share those secrets.
But I will share what goes into getting ready for a race like that. It’s a pretty huge undertaking for a mediocre athlete such as myself. Hardrock is a 100…

It seemed like such a great idea.
Three hundred and sixty five days of something.
The idea came to me while I was riding my mountain bike. I was picking my way through an icy trail in Palmer Park. “Wouldn’t it be cool to do something like this every day?” I thought to…
