LRR training run

I've been running Pikes Peak for the past 16 years.  Whether it's the Ascent, Marathon, or both, I haven't missed a year.  The training is the best part of this adventure.  I've met so many people running in, around, and on the mountains around Colorado Springs.

I run with a club called the Incline Club.  It was started by a some people who wanted to get better running up Pikes Peak.  Matt Carpenter and Larry Miller are…

DAY ONE - PIKES PEAK ASCENT training - OMG what have I gotten myself into????????

Day ONE – Pikes Peak Ascent training – How could I forget how brutal this is??

Somehow I got a wild hair and decided I wanted to run the Pikes Peak Ascent again.  I mean run/jog/hike/walk/maybe even crawl up the Peak again.  The weather finally warranted a trip up the Peak to start Day ONE – Ascent training.

Dave and I started at Memorial Park on a beautiful Colorado morning.  As we ran up Manitou Avenue I was feeling pretty pleased with myself.  Even when we turned up Ruxton…

I'm a Marmot

Yesterday I was introduced to the Mighty Marmot Nation.  This means I get to run in the Triple Crown for the first time in a long time.  The first race will be the Garden of the Gods 10 miler, followed by the Summer Roundup Trail Run, and culminating with the Pikes Peak Ascent in August.

I'll be joined on this year's team by Anna Meehan, Danielle Spivey, Jen Samora, David Mulligan, and Mike Mazzola.  .

I have not run the Garden of the Gods race since 2009.  I…

A BQ on a Broken Ankle

Nothing was shaping up in my favor, as I road the bus to the starting line of the Colorado Marathon. The weather was snowy and cold to start. During the week, I had begun looking for other marathons that I could run to Boston Qualify, in the event that my time was affected by the impeding crappy weather. I'm not sure why I was so concerned, considering that some of my best racing has happened during the winter months. As I finally stepped off the bus, with only minutes to spare, I decided to…

The Woods

Like many, I suffer from childhood amnesia. I don't remember much about the first four years of my life or the first house I grew up in, but I do recall the second. It was a brand new traditional home, two stories, with off-white vinyl siding and faded blue shutters to match the front door. The house was at the end of a cul de sac in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina, and our family was one of the first to move to the neighborhood. …

Bubbles

I looked at the calendar, it’s almost May, and I can’t believe the crazy whirlwind that’s comprised the last 6 months. Life in rep-land is a little like a weird time-warp; you’re always planning for a million things and/or going somewhere and before you know it a month has gone by and it feels like a week.

One great thing about time feeling as though it has elapsed in fast-forward motion is that finally--and I…

There's my Purpose! Where the Hell Have You Been?

I’m not sure what’s going around these days, but it seems like many folks seem to be suffering from a slump that started at the end of 2015. I am no exception as I spent most of last year trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon where I came up short in September with a 3:58 when I needed a 3:45. It seemed to suck all the motivation right out of me, despite the fact that I…

Here We Go Again...

Turning 40 has not been good for my running.

I made a last ditch effort to go sub three at Pikes last year, and once again came up short.  I lost motivation, got injured, had a disaster of a race at NYC in November (3:30, off a 1:30 first half), then quit physical activity for two full months.  By far the biggest break I've ever taken from running since I picked up the sport almost three decades ago.  I used all that extra time to drink beer and eat lots of junk food, packing…
