2016 Inaugural Brewers' Cup

For 2016, I had this crazy idea to start something called the Brewers’ Cup. The premise was simply to find other folks who loved beer and running as much as I do and make it a little competition. I had an inkling that there were a good number of people who might want to play along, but I had no idea that that number would explode to 19 teams of 15 runners each, with a waiting list that expands every day since we’ve started the competition two days ago.

I didn’t do very well in high…

This Is (Not Quite) Sparta!

It's 7:00 in the morning and I'm standing at the footsteps of the Acropolis, tethered to another person, a friend, Jason Romero and we're surrounded by a crowd of 400 others. Jason is double fisting a couple bottles of Ensure and I'm tinkering with a GoPro camera with a dead battery. Reality is sinking in. We wonder aloud how we're going to run 153 miles from Athens to Sparta in under 36 hours. But the answer doesn't matter…

Adventures In Biomechanics-Land

Since I've retired from BRC and am currently in limbo between jobs, I've had loads of time to do everything I've put off for ages (hence 2 blog posts in a week!). I could get used to this...but not gonna happen. But in the meantime I'll just talk about myself.

Anyway, one project I'd been meaning to knock out for several weeks was getting to the bottom of a year-plus long plantar fascia injury, because I'd decided I had enough of treating symptoms.…

Crossroads

The last couple of months have seen a pretty huge change in direction. Anyone who knows me, knows I don't really like change. I love routine: I would do the exact same things at the exact same time everyday, like a little drone, if it were an option. Which more or less sums up the majority of my day to day life. I know I know, I really live life on the edge.

There aren't a ton of inevitable things in life, but there are a couple: a good…

Defeating the Mangler

It's been quiet in my corner of the bloggosphere for a while. Crickets. I've kind of been neglecting it on purpose, I mean, people want to hear about PR's, wins, and epic races in far corners of the globe and the science and physiology behind your last workout (which was epic as well, naturally), oh and everything is to be labeled with #Rio2016. Yes, I like hearing about that stuff too. Absolutely no one wants to hear about your latest (non)epic pool run or your granny-shuffle around…

The Berlin Marathon!

WHEW! I know it was a two weeks ago, but I just got back from my travels aboard and wanted to post a race report for the Berlin Marathon!

I ran the race through Marathon Tours and felt like they were very well organized (running it through them included their membership fee, the race cost and hotel cost for 4 nights).  The hotel was centrally located in Berlin so it made for an easy walk to the start line…well as easy as walking to the start line with 40,000 other racers can…

Mt. Yale

When it's still 80 degrees and sunny in late September, it's as if the world is presenting you with an invitation to explore.  By "explore," I really mean run up mountains.  After the sense of accomplishment mixed with humbling quad pain and 10 days of slow running that I experienced after my last adventure above 14,000', I was eager to do it again.  When a friend decided to go run Mt. Yale yesterday, I obviously jumped at the idea, like any normal person would when presented with the notion…

The Kite Lake Triple

Last Thursday I was first introduced to the notion of the Kite Lake Triple, which calls itself "a race amongst friends" and takes runners up four 14ers in the span of 8 miles. On Saturday morning at 4:55am I was on my way to the race start in Alma with friends. Today, the following Friday, I can walk downhill and only wince a little as quads remember what last weekend put them through.

The moment you get out of the car on the rocky road that leads to the trail head you can feel the…

Crushing the Desert of Despair

I've been told that if you can't define success, then it's impossible to achieve. That is why I take a deep look within myself before setting any lofty goals. I believe it's important to understand why I've set those particular goals and what I'm specifically trying to achieve. Success for me has always been defined as the fulfillment of my soul.

Several months back I set a goal to qualify for Boston by running the Big Cottonwood marathon in Salt Lake City. For a 43-year-old woman,…
