The Best Laid Plans of Mice and SHANA Oft Go Awry........

Quick side note before we get into the thick of things. I feel like I haven’t given enough love to our other Marmot Sponsor, Mountain Equipment Recyclers. I just went in there the other day because I needed a sleeping mat, and they had the perfect one for me! I love the staff, and I appreciate how they handle my…

Running in Taryall, Colorado

I often find myself with writers block.  I have decided to venture into vlogging my running activities.  These videos will be  raw and real with very little editing.

Love Hate Relationship with the Incline

Why does everyone love the Incline?  To my readers please answer this.

The negatives:

  • I can't run up the thing so I am just walking
  • To many people, unless it is the winter time or the weather is bad
  • Top section of the trail still needs repair and is one big hazard

The positives:

  • One hell of a leg work out

As you can see I dislike the Incline more than I love it.  Just the other day the attack pack running…

Slow Marmot/High Marmot/Wet Marmot

Officially finished the Barr Trail Mountain Race!! However, I was the last official finisher within the 3:30 time limit. I knew this race was going to be tough. It was more of a mental issue this year. Last year, 2016, I took a nasty fall at Lightening Point and literally broke my cheek bone and sprained my right ankle really bad. I was fretting about finishing this race again since I took that fall last year. Race morning, I woke up and repeated to myself, all I need to do…

Forgive yourself! Be flexible!

When I wrote my last post, I was literally boarding a plane to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We headed to this beautiful part of the world as a graduation present for my step-son, Dylan. As I packed for this trip, I packed workout gear for everyday. The hotel we stayed at had a good gym, including spin bikes. My motivation to workout was high, especially coming off one of my best training weeks, in awhile.

I don't know how many of you pack workout gear and never touch it, but that…

Slow Motion

So by now I've learned that keeping up with the blogging is much harder this year than it was last time. Sorry, Tim!

Anyway, less than a month to go before we all toe the line to take on The Mountain. (Hoping our trials against it are more successful than those against the Game of Thrones character by the same name.) Since I last checked in, I've raced twice: the Summer Roundup Trail Run, aka the second leg of the Triple Crown, and the Barr Trail Mountain Race, aka the scrappy little…

The Day Shana Got High: A Tale of Triumph and the Attack of the Great Bonk Monster

And I took a deep breath

And I got real high,

And I screamed from the top of my lungs,

'Tis the Season

I remember my first trip up to train on the summit of Pikes back in the summer of 2014 one morning shortly after Mt. Washington, and glancing up to see my first bighorn sheep up close as I was picking my way across the Cog Railroad tracks…

Pretty good week!

The past week has included some good training days. In the past 7 days, I have worked out for 5 of them. That is great news, even though it has not included any running. I have used the stationary bike and a couple versions of elliptical machines. In addition, I lifted 3 times!!

I am excited about my opportunity to run the Pikes Peak Marathon and I am going to do everything I can to ensure that I can finish and stay healthy.

An interesting part about cross training is the… Continue

Pikes Peak Elite Track Club: "Think Global, Race Local"

They say "Think global, act local," and the same can be applied with racing. After having raced all over the globe from Mungyeong, South Korea to the LA Olympic trials, to Doha, Qatar and Eugene, Oregon; many of our runners have been enjoying the local racing scene right here in Colorado Springs! While qualifying for USA Championships and International races is the big goal…

Frustrated, but Thankful!

actually wrote this post yesterday and almost submitted it, but chose to sit on it for a day and look at it again today. I don't usually do that, I usually think of something I want to share during a run and then just sit down, write, and then hit submit.

I do not know why I chose to sit on this one. Maybe it was the hope my thoughts about my race would change or maybe it was the sheer vulnerability I put in writing. Truth be told, it was both. My friend Dan Angeles suggested that…

I Ran Laps Right Round Baby, Right Round...

Any time I can use lyrics from '80's or '90's music in life I get happy! This particular song was in my head the ENTIRE time I ran yesterday.

How happy are you that the hill of awesomeness times three is over?!?  I have never run the Summer Roundup before so I'm not sure what the course was like in past years.  All I know is that 3 times up that hill made me feel like…

Leg #2/Summer Round Up--Don't quit!

Summer Round up is in the books. I started the weekend in beautiful Vail for the Vail Hill Climb. It was a great morning with great temperatures. However, my body was trying to get the best of me. My motto was to take one step at a time until I crossed the finish line. I was successful in completing the Vail Hill Climb but it was exhausting. I tried my best to rest and hydrate for Summer Round up.

This morning I woke up early ad tried to prepare as much as I could for the run. Stomach…

I Get to Run In Colorado Springs, CO!!

Now I know I am biased because this is where I started my running career, but I am spoiled.

I was just on vacation in western New York, Bemus Point to be exact, and the humidity just kills me.  I had to go out on runs at 6am and five minutes into the run I was soaking wet and miserable.   I needed the miles so I trudged on not really having any fun.  Last year while…

Training Roundup

No time like the present (and a long holiday weekend) to really get serious about this little jog up and down a mountain, right?

Carrie and I formed an ambitious plan to double up longer efforts this weekend with a Rampart Reservoir loop on Sunday and a high-altitude marmot scramble on Monday. She rounded out the weekend with a long bike ride on Saturday, and…
