Garden of the Gods 10 miler, 2018 Race Report

Hello everyone, Brian McCarrie here with my Garden of the Gods 10 miler Race Report.

First of all, I was really nervous going into this run. It's been a while since I've run 10 miles and I honestly didn't know how it was going to turn out but in the end I didn't do horrible so that's good.

Here's how the day went.

Fortunately I didn't have any pre-race anxiety and was able to get a good nights sleep and I woke up at 6:00am feeling rested. I live right down the street…

Running the Triple Crown in 2018, I'm a Marmot!

I've run the Triple Crown before. I've actually run it several times. I've completed the Pikes Peak Ascent 5 times and the Pikes Peak marathon once. My best Ascent time is 4:12. That was 9 years ago. Since that time, for one reason or another, I've slipped away from running. Focusing on different activities from time to time. I've always been a mountain biker so I would ride my bike, I did Crossfit for a while, I would swim or go to the gym and do my own workouts but I've always loved…

So I hooked up with the Acacia Park ride this past Sunday

I was a bit nervous about going to this ride for a few reasons. Were people going to look at me like I didn't belong there? Where people going to look at my older bike and think "who's the old school dude on the old bike"? But most of all I was a bit nervous because I wasn't sure if I could keep up.

I got there right at 10:00am and no one was there. I started to think, maybe I already missed them. I hung out for a few minutes and people started to show up. After about 10 min or so,…

2010 Harvest Moon Long Distance Triathlon: Race Report

So I participated in the Harvest Moon Triathlon this past weekend. It was a good event. I am by far, not a seasoned triathlete but I did apply some lessons that I've learned in the past, some new information that I've recently acquired and I learned some new things about how I would approach a long course triathlon in the future.

Here are the distances: Swim = 1.2 miles. Bike = 56 miles. Run = 13.1 miles.

First, my times.

A great workout on Saturday.

The Plan:

1. Get up early, go to the Manitou Pool and swim 1 mile.

2. After the swim, ride my bike up the pass to Divide and back down.

3. Run 6 miles in Garden of the Gods.

The SWIM

Everything started out great. I made it to the Manitou pool just before they opened, quickly got changed and was in the pool by about 7:05am. I swam 1 mile (1,600 yards). I would swim 75 yards freestyle and then… Continue

Trying to get my training back on track.

Somewhere along the line, this summer I got off track. Maybe it was the mid summer cold I had or maybe it was the emergency trip to Alabama to visit my father-in-law who was having medical problems. Not sure when but my training went South and so did my motivation.

I've been trying to get back on track lately and I'm off to a pretty good start this week.

Monday: Early morning interval ride on the trainer. Later that evening I went for a 4 mile run with my daughter. She's… Continue

My favorite places to mountain bike in the Springs.

We're so lucky here in the Springs. We've so much great riding and it's so close. The list below is some of my favorite places to ride.

1. The Chutes, Gold Camp Rd., Buckhorn, Capt. Jacks, Gold Camp to the Chutes loop.

By far, my favorite ride in the area. Maybe it's because this was the first big ride I did when I first moved here 16 years ago. Maybe it's because it starts with a killer climb and ends with a hellacious downhill bomb with… Continue

Ultra Rob saved my life in Leadville!!!

When my friend Wade, asked me to join him on a training ride in Leadville, I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I agreed to go. I knew it was going to be a long ride and a big day but I don't think I knew how big.

He explained that we would park in one place and go up the Columbine climb and then head back across and go up the Powerline climb. Sounded easy enough. Little did I know that we were going to park 22 miles away from the base of the Columbine…

Afternoon Westside Road Ride

Got out on the road bike today for a much needed and hilly road rode.

I started at my house in Pleasant Valley and headed up Fontmore/Filmore over to where it meets Centennial Blvd. I took Centennial North past Vindicator to where it turns into Woodmen Rd. I proceeded down Woodmen out by I-25 and made a right on to Corporate Center Dr. and then another quick right onto Mark Dabling. Took Mark Dabling down to Rockrimmon Blvd. and took that up to Vindicator. Made a left on Vindicator,… Continue

The best swim of the year!

I've been feeling a bit distracted lately with my training so I've sort of just gone with the flow. I ride when I feel like riding, I run when I feel like running and I swim when I feel like swimming. This has lead to a lot more rest and I've actually gained a couple pounds. So this morning when I went swimming, I wasn't expecting much. Turns out, I've never felt stronger in the water. I could tell it was going to be a good work out as soon as I got in the water. The first lap felt… Continue

First Garden of the Gods training run of the year

The alarm went off at 5:30am and I rolled out of bed. I had my running clothes all laid out so I could get dressed quickly. I drank some water and headed over to the Garden of the Gods. As I was driving into the Garden, the moon was still up and it was dark. I thought to myself, nothing like a trail run on rocky terrain at night.

I pulled into the main parking lot and was surprised to see a lot of people already there. They were all geared up with cold weather running gear and head… Continue

Windy road ride this morning.

20 mile road ride this morning in the wind. Started at my house over by Garden of the Gods, rode up Filmore East to Centennial. Took a left on Centennial and down to Garden of the Gods Rd. Continued on Centennial all the way out to where it turns into Woodmen. It was windy on Centennial. Had a head wind for a few miles there. Once I was on Woodmen, I took it down to a road called Orchard Valley Rd. Orchard Valley is a steep climb that brings you back up to Centennial at about the…

No swim workout today

I love the snow and all but getting up at 5:00am and driving on an ice rink to the pool really isn't my idea of a good time. So I'll be riding the bike trainer today!

An easy ride today after a week of being sick.

Last Tuesday I ran with the Jack Quinn's running club. The next morning, I woke up with a cold. Headache and sinus congestion. After a couple of days, I thought I was over it, I wasn't even close. The cold then proceeded to congest my lungs. When I would cough I would be coughing up little chunks of goop and I would feel a little gurgling as well.

Needless to say, my training was put on hold. For any of you that have a had a similar experience, I'm sure you understand how I felt. As… Continue

A great swim this morning

After being sick last week, I feel like I'm finally getting back on track. Swam on Wednesday morning, ran on the treadmill Thursday night and swam this morning. I've got a long run planned for tomorrow. After that, I should be back in the swing of things.

I'm glad because I hate being sick.

It never fails though, I get into a good training groove and maintain a good schedule for a certain amount of time and then I boost up my training or change something and BAM! I get… Continue

After last weeks "Great Week of Training" I caught a cold

I guess I pushed it a little too hard last week because I ended up being sick with a cold on Saturday, Sunday and took Monday off from work. Tuesday morning, I started to feel better so I ran with the Jack Quinn's running club and then this morning I was back in the pool with the Colorado Springs Swim Team masters group. Still have a bit of a sinus headache but for the most part I'm back to normal.

So if all goes well, the rest of the week will look like this.

Tonight: Ride… Continue
