For the record: I'm not a fast runner. I'm a solid middle-of-the-packer who sometimes makes it into the top third in my age group. Part of that is the remarkable running community in this town. You people are talented, and more ambitious runners keep arriving all the time. (Take my friend Scott Spillman, who moved to town late last year. He won the …

Ran the Summer Roundup Trail Run route today (5/15). This is the best part, coming down High Drive after going up for the first 3.8 miles before turning around. I don't want to tell you what my time was because I don't want my competitors to have an unfair advantage. I wouldn't want them to know that they can stop and have a leisurely lunch at the…

Recognize that an obstacle is only temporary. Giving up is not an option if you want to succeed. Giving in for a bit of time can work in your favor, if it's only temporary. If giving in helps you recognize what the problem is, what it means you and how important it is to overcome, then by all means give in temporarily. If you give up instead of giving in,…

Hey Fellow Colorado Springs Runners,

My running partner Kim and I made plans to hike to Barr Camp. Since this was my first time up to Barr Camp, I found it to be an interesting hike.
Kim and I planed to meet at 7am. We ended up parking together and gearing up at the cars. Very glad I decided to bring my layers.…

I like to think of myself as a dreamer. An ideas man. Sometimes these grand visions fail to come to fruition and remain just thoughts. Other times, they are attempted but for one reason or another, they fall apart. Such was the case when a buddy of mine in NC decided to hike from Mt. Mitchell to Mt. Pisgah. Things went smoothly except we spent the first day hiking in the wrong direction and wound up in Busick, NC (never heard of it? neither had we) only to call his parents to bail us…

I ran my first 5k when I was 8... I won. When my Mother tells the story she usually fails to mention that I was 1 of 2 entry's in my age division, or that she left me to run the second half by myself. 8 years old running down the road with a group of strangers. I am ok and currently have no long term trauma from the event that I am aware of. Since then I have run for my high school cross country team, run to stay in shape for college soccer, and run to maintain my PT score for the Marine…

I made a decision to take a few days of from my running and let my legs heal. My left shin has been giving me a little trouble when I am running down hill, so I figured a few days off from running would do me some good.
Like an addict, when you don't feed your addiction you get withdrawals. All you think about is when you will get your next fix. So as I am sitting here on the couch, I am getting the antsy feeling and all I can think about is:

I will admit I was a little hesitant about "it". I've thought about "it" a few times. Most of the time it was the heat of the moment on a trail or on a hike when I wished I would have done "it" already. I was told that I should give it a try and see what I think about it. I was warned to start out slow and to only do it for a short time, because I might be sore for a little bit; but the more I do it the less…
