Start of the Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race 50K

Ryan Burch and Jason Koop charged up and down the hills at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, throwing surges at each other the way prize fighters exchange punches. Ultimately, it was fatigue that separated the winner from the runner-up in the Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race 50K. Burch, of Fort Collins, who was competing in his first ultra-distance race of the year, pulled away from Koop after they had passed the half-way point and held on to win in 3:57:35. Koop, of Colorado Springs, who had raced in the Zane Grey 50 the week before, stayed close but settled for second (3:59:04) on race-weary legs. Mike Hamilton placed third in 4:39:21.
In the women's race, Connilee Walter won the first ultra she had ever entered, covering the 31-mile distance in 5:12:54.Paula Moore was second in 5:28:43, followed by Gayle Zorilla (5:35:43.)
