Fourteen-year-old Kayli Tabares won the Canya Cañon 7K trail race on Sunday, covering a new course through Stratton Open Space in 35 minutes, 50 seconds. It was her second win at Canya Cañon in three years. She finished second in 2012.
The race is a fundraiser for Friends of Cheyenne Cañon. The course has traditionally followed the singletrack Columbine Trail, which skirts the north slope of the cañon. But September's hard rains washed out trails and roads and forced race organizers to find a new route. Though the course didn't include the tough elevation gains of the Columbine Trail, it did offer some hard climbs and fast and furious descending.
Brianne Pierson (40:11) finished second in the women's race, followed closely by Renee Renn (40:16).
In the men's race Pete Maksimow stole the show with a quick time of 28:58. Jay Meservey (29:31) finished second, with Dan Vega third in 29:41.
