I'm looking to buy a road bike (first one) that doesn't need to be anything fancy but one so I can decide if road biking is for me...need an opinion of best place to buy as I've been into Criterium, Ted's, Bicycle Village and bike store by where I work downtown on Tejon & Colorado...Any suggestions of bikes a "novice" would be good for?

Hey Trudy ... I don't have a favorite place. My advice is to visit several shops, talk to the people there and see who you're comfortable with. Wherever you purchase your bike, you'll likely take it there to be tuned up or fixed if and when something breaks. It's good to get to know them. Be sure to tell them you're just starting out with road cycling. Ride several bikes. Most shops will let you take 'em for a test ride. Find the bike that fits, that really "speaks" to you. Silly, I know, but cyclists love their bikes the way cowboys love their horses.
I don't know about the bike for you, but definitely the ride! Sundays at 1PM at Acacia Park. This group ride is easy and fun. The experience of the road bikers in the group will be priceless, and you'll have that "safety in numbers" sense of security should your bike give you any trouble. Good luck.
Tim's advice is sound. Ride several and find the ones that fit. Lots of reputable bike shops in town so if you find one you like and are comfortable with the folks working there, go for it! Can't wait to see a pic of your new bike! :-)
