Fountain Valley High School teacher Tommy Manning wins Widefield 5-miler, prepares for Boston Marathon

Tommy Manning loped across the finish line at the Widefield 5-Mile Run on Saturday at Fountain Creek Regional Park. He had won the race with a time of 30 minutes, 26 seconds.

But he wasn't finished ... not a by a long shot. Manning caught his breath and prepared to knock off another 15 miles. That's the way it goes when you're one of the top marathon runners in Colorado.

Manning is preparing for the Boston Marathon on April 19. He placed 34th there last year with a time of 2:26:57.

This year, he's hoping for something better.

"I'm going for top 25," Manning said.

If he can trim four minutes from his 2009 time, a top-25 finish at arguably the world's most famous running race is possible. The runner who placed 25th last year, 41-year-old Carl Rudell of Birmingham, Mich., posted a 2:24:19. See Boston's 2009 results.

Manning's 100-mile-a-week training regimen should help. A math and science teacher and assistant track coach at Fountain Valley School, Manning finished second in the 2009 Pikes Peak Ascent with a time of 2:19:59.

It was a cold morning for a run. A wintry blast that forced runners to stay home across much of the state, greeted a tough group of 60 with temperatures of about 22 degrees at the start of the race. Nobody was complaining, however. The race was a fundraiser for the Widefield and Mesa Ridge track teams.

"It's not that bad and it's for a good cause," said women's race winner Georgann Richardson, who finished in 41:23.

Results were hand timed. Full results will be posted online at cc.wsd3.org. Click "special events."
