Colorado Springs Independent's Give Campaign

It was a beautiful day for the Cañya Cañon 6K Run in Cheyenne Cañon. About 250 runners turned out to support Friends of Cheyenne Cañon, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Pikes Peak Humane Society and learn about the Colorado Springs Independent's Give Campaign, which annually raises money for several nonprofit organizations in the Pikes Peak Region.
Gerald Romero won with a time of 31 minutes, 50 seconds, a few strides ahead of Kevin Morgan. The two have competed in local races nearly every weekend this year and have formed a friendly rivalry.
They pushed their limits in Cheyenne Cañon, charging up the Columbine Trail.
"That was tough, man," said Romero, who defended his Cañya Cañon title of a year ago. "I pushed it as hard as I could."
Morgan took the lead for a short time on the final uphill portions of the course, but could not keep Romero's pace on the final downhill pitch.
"Gerald can run going downhill," Morgan said. "He'll make you sick."
They've covered many miles this season, including the Triple Crown of Running (both were Top 25 in the Pikes Peak Ascent), the Xterra Half Marathon in Cheyenne Mountain State Park and every neighborhood 5K they could enter.
"It's been a hell of a year," Romero said. "Garden of the Gods, Roundup (Trail Run), Pikes Peak, you name it."
