I'm an avid mountain biker - single speeder.  I recently found out I've got a cracked frame.  While waiting for a warranty replacement, I've tried running.  Unfortunately, I wind up with a strained calf.  Trails, tracks, streets, it doesn't matter.  Anyone have any suggestions or hints on what I may be doing, or not doing correctly?

probably just a muscle specificity issue.  Cycling is killer for building quads, glutes, hamstrings but under emphasizes the ligaments and musculature of the calf that is built through repeated contact with the earth.  Ice massage, 3 days off, ibuprofin 3 times a day.  As somebody who switches back and forth from the 2 sports from time to time I feel your pain, "quite literally."

I've experienced the very thing you're talking about. I was a runner for years and I had very few problems. Then I discovered cycling and forgot about running for a while. When I returned to running, my legs revolted ... The problems were in my calves. I'm no coach or trainer, but three things I've learned: start slow, run on a soft surface (no asphalt or cement), keep the miles down, stretch.

And I also have to agree with Laddymackcoaltrain ... ice and rest really help.

Make sure you are in good running shoes that are built for your specific foot biomechanics.  Just like riding your bike with your seat  too low or high you will have problems with muscles because of lack of range of motion or too much motion.  Also coming off the bike you need to realize that running is much more weight barring and the shock  the muscles are encountering  can also attribute to lower leg pain.  Feel free to bring your shoes into the store and we can film you running and let you know if it is a shoe issue or somthing else.

Thanks all for the replies.  Today was a little better, but still with the pain.  If I can make it out to BRC, I'll take you up on your offer!
