Simon Gutierrez, 46, of Colorado Springs, said he enjoyed the 20-something-degree temperatures at the Pikes Peak Road Ascent. He certainly ran as if he were in his element. Gutierrez covered the 10K distance on the frosty Pikes Peak Highway in 43 minutes, 23 seconds. The race began at the Pikes Peak Highway toll gate (7,750 feet elevation) and covered the first 6.2 miles of the famous road that leads to the summit of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak. It ended at Crystal Reservoir, at about 9,100 feet. Maksimow, who collected about one pound of ice in his runner's beard along the way, said his legs were frozen until the fifth mile. The 33-year-old Manitou Springs resident finished in 44:46. Gerald Romero, 41, was third in 47:43.
