Longtime Colorado Springs-area runner and race volunteer Al Grimme was making the Nielson Challenge race course ready on Saturday morning when he received a nice surprise. John Gardner, president of the Pikes Peak Road Runners presented Grimme with a lifetime membership for his work in the running community. Grimme has been a member of the Pikes Peak Road Runner since 1978, when he moved here from Pennsylvania to train at altitude. He competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials in 1980 and 1984. These day's he is known as an invaluable volunteer and the runner who spearheaded a fund-raising effort to build a track for blind students at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind.
