Jason Delaney had just enough strength left in his legs to hold off Tommy Manning in the inaugural Pikes Peak Road Ascent. Delany, 31, of Golden, finished in 1 hour, 21 minutes, 43.5 seconds. Manning, 35, of Colorado Springs, who closed a 150-meter gap in the last half mile ran out of gas a few strides from the finish line. He clocked 1:21:47.2.
The new race began at the Pikes Peak Highway toll gate and climbed 11.6 miles to 11,450 feet to end at Glen Cove on the northern flanks of Pikes Peak. Simon Gutierrez, 45, of Colorado Springs, finished third in 1:26:39.3.
