Once she hit timberline at about 11,000 feet elevation, Ashlee Nelson knew she could hold on for second place in the 2013 Pikes Peak Ascent.
"You get out of the trees and you can see the summit," she said. "It just makes it a lot easier."
Nelson, 32, of Colorado Springs, and the mother to 18-month old son Carter, finished in 2:48:58, a personal best.
