With half a mile remaining in the Pikes Peak Marathon, Alex Nichols and Touro Miyahara ran shoulder to shoulder. But after a taxing ascent of the 14,115-foot peak, Nichols' strength was gone and Miyahara pulled away to win in 3:43:23. Nichols finished 23 seconds off the winning pace.
