Did a one-day rim-to-rim hike in May 2008. One of the greatest days of my life. Took my time and soaked in the light, color and outrageous expanse of the Grand Canyon landscape.
The hike was long, 24 miles approx., but not difficult. I was 49 at the time and I'd trained pretty hard on the Manitou Incline, plus some runs and mountain biking. I don't consider myself highly experienced, but my opinion is that anyone who can climb Pikes Peak can do a rim-to-rim.
I'd also suggest doing some homework in advance to learn about the ideal times to hike. We hiked on May 22, beginning on the north rim in three inches of snow. Hit Phantom Ranch (the bottom) along the Colorado River in a perfect springtime 70-degrees (it can be much warmer that time of year), then climbed to the south rim in intermittent rain showers. Hit the top in freezing wind and sleet.
It was a fantastic adventure.
