The Fisher DeBerry Foundation 5K Run and Walk

About 150 people turned out on Saturday for the 7th Fisher DeBerry Foundation 5K Run and Walk at Washburn Field. The race served as a fundraiser for the Colorado Springs FCA, The Home Front Cares, Single Parent Family Ministry and the Fisher DeBerry Foundation. The legendary Air Force Football coach attended along with current AFA coach Troy Calhoun.
Channel 5 and 30 Sports Anchor Lee Douglas did most of the announcing, then he handed the mic to DeBerry, who joked about the chilly wind.
“When we left North Carolina it was 80 degrees,” DeBerry said. “We got here on Wednesday and today is the first time we’ve been outside. I almost forgot how cold it can be here.”
Boulder Running Company runner Andy Rinne, 34, of Colorado Springs, won the men’s race with a time of 16 minutes, 51 seconds. It was his third 5K victory in the last three weekends. He won at the Cherry Creek Sneak and at Canon City last week.
“I did a lot of training over the winter, 60 to 70 miles a week, to get ready for this year,” he said.
His goal this year is to hit a time in the 15:50 range, about six seconds faster than his personal best.
Ben Taber, 20, of Colorado Springs, finished second in 17:27. Gerald Romero (38, Colorado Springs) was third in 17:39.
A UCCS student who hopes to compete for the Mountain Lions next year, Katy McCrimmon won the women’s race with a new course-record time of 21:17.
She ran at Pine Creek High School, but “I wasn’t any good at it.”
She trains with her father, James McCrimmon, who ran 20:18 and placed second in the men’s 45-49 age group.
The best performance of the day may have been that of 11-year-old Katie Rainsberger of Colorado Springs who finished second in the women’s race with a time of 21:59.
Leslie Bennett, 22, Colorado Springs was third in 22:12.
