A longtime member of the Pikes Peak Road Runners, Dave Sorenson received a standing ovation from a crowd of about 150 at the Fall Series Awards Ceremony Saturday at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.
Sorenson, who has worked tirelessly for years as the organization's chief race timer and web master, announced this year that he will step down in December.
A friendly a humble person, Sorenson sat in the crowd and listened as his friends stepped to the podium to thank him for working thousands of races and helping to make the Road Runners one of the most respected clubs in the U.S.
"I don't think there is anyone who would disagree that Dave is the heart and soul of the Pikes Peak Road Runners," said outgoing club president Mike Shafai.
The Road Runners also held club elections, with Bethany Garner elected president. She'll take over on Jan.1 for Shafai, who will remain on the board.
The Road Runners also presented a check for $19,000 to the Trails and Open Space Coalition. The two nonprofits co-produce the American Discovery Trail Marathon. A check for $885 was delivered to the Colorado Veteran's Resource Coalition.
Shafai and Lori Hawkins, the editor of the club's "Long Run" newsletter, were recognized as the club's volunteers of the year.
