The Classical Academy and Cheyenne Mountain High Schools won boys and girls state cross country championships Saturday at Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.
It was the eighth consecutive state title for the TCA girls, who overcame some bad luck in the last week. Team leader Shelby Stableford was sick and could barely get out of bed to run. But the Titans ran as a team, scoring 39 points to second-place Hotchkiss' 95.
Cheyenne Mountain's girls, behind a fifth-place run by Danielle Grossman and a gutsy comeback race by senior Kali Maxwell captured the Class 4A team championship - the first girls cross country title in school history - with 108 points. Evergreen was second with 140.
In the boys' races, TCA's Josh Simkins and Adam Avischious placed second and third respectively as the Titans claimed their fourth team title in school history.
Cheyenne Mountain's boys placed five runners in the top 40 to win for only the second time in school history. The Indians scored 115 points to second-place Thompson Valley's 222.
Palmer Ridge's Spencer Wenck won the Class 4A boys race in 15 minutes, 55.42 seconds. It was the fastest time of all the runners in the state meet.
