The U.S. Army took Tejon Street on Saturday.

Army team runners Robert Cheseret and John Mickowski basically finished in a tie in the 5K on St. Patrick’s Day race. Both were credited with times of 15 minutes, 1 second, but Cheseret was given the victory. (More photos here.)

“Not too bad for the first race of the season,” said the Kenyan-born Cheseret, brother of 2010 3,000-meter world indoor champion Bernard Lagat.

Cheseret and Mickowski are part of the World Class Athlete Progam that gives soldiers with world-class potential a chance to train to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

They’re being coached by Gary Staines, owner of the Runner’s Roost and 1988 Olympian (Great Britian, 5,000 meters, 13th).

Cheseret and Mickowski said they weren’t concerned about beating each other. It was all about training on a flat course on a beautiful spring day.

“We train together, we just wanted to run hard,” Mickowski said.

Alamosa’s Matt Levassiur, who runs for Brooks, stuck with the Army runners for most of the race, but faded in the last half mile. He finished third in 15:11.

Manitou Springs’ Alisha Williams won the women’s race for the second year in a row. The Boulder Running Company/Adidas runner hit the finish line in a course record 17:15.35.

Williams recently placed eighth in the 3,000-meter run at the U.S. Indoor championships. She’s aiming for good finish at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford University in May. But on Saturday she was the queen of the road on what could be considered her home course. “It was a good feeling for me to race locally,” Williams said.

Boulder Running Company/Adidas runner Wendy Thomas of Windsor was second, in 18:01.85.
