These lucky riders were smiling with anticipation of riding in the inaugural Susan G. Komen Ride for the Cure last July at Pikes Peak International Raceway. The 2012 ride is slated for June 24 with a start/finish at Metcalfe Park in Fountain.

One year ago, breast cancer survivor Gayle Allen had an idea that cyclists in Colorado would ride to help in the fight against breast cancer.
She was right. A few months later, about 180 riders gathered at Pikes Peak International Raceway for the inaugural Susan G. Komen Ride for the Cure. The event was a hit, and it marked the beginning of a tradition that continues this year.

The second annual Ride for the Cure will begin at 7:30 a.m. on June 24 in John Metcalfe Park in Fountain. Cyclists will have the option to ride routes of 20, 40, or 70 miles across the eastern plains of Colorado. The event will be fully supported with rejuvenation stations stocked with food and drink. And maintenance technicians will patrol the routes to help with any mechanical problems.

Riders will then return to a catered lunch and the Ride for the Cure Expo at Metcalfe Park.

Registration information, route maps, event schedule, and details about sponsoring or volunteering for the ride can be found at www.komensecolorado.org.

The second Ride for the Cure is in good hands. Marge Milne, longtime local cyclist and breast cancer survivor who served as an honorary chair for the 2011 Ride For the Cure, has taken over as chairperson in 2012. Hillary Hienton, school teacher and a founding member of the Women’s Mountain Biking Association, and Alison Watt, endurance cyclist and breast cancer patient who is preparing to ride in the 2012 Leadville 100, will serve as honorary chairs.

In Colorado, one in seven women will confront breast cancer in their lifetimes. Help us reverse that trend. Imagine what the Susan G. Komen Ride for the Cure™ can become. Imagine breaking away from breast cancer.
