Reacting to Ride the Divide

I want to give a big thanks to Medicine Wheel and Mountain Chalet for sponsoring last night's viewing of Ride the Divide. It was an amazing story of the underground mountain bike race that starts in Banff, Alberta and ends at the US-Mexican border after traversing most of the continental Divide. The ride is truly epic! Also, thanks to our biking community for supporting Medicine Wheel's project to complete the "missing link" section of the soon-to-be opened South Slope Area of Pikes Peak.

Thanks, Jack! I agree, Ride the Divide is an amazing story, supported by beautiful photography. It was thrilling to see the riders making their way along the Continental Divide. It reminded me that North America is still home to vast expanses of wild country.

I especially enjoyed the clips that featured the "locals," the funky people that provide so much character to the mountain culture. I also enjoyed seeing South Park, Hartsel, Buena Vista and Salida in the film. For me, Colorado was especially beautiful. Of course, I'm biased.

Medicine Wheel hit a home run in choosing this event as the start of its fundraising efforts for the new Missing Link trail, a project that Medicine Wheel spokesperson Jim Schwerin predicted would cost $250,000 to complete. And the caring Colorado Springs residents who filled Stargazers Theater also deserve congratulations for their particpation.

Our outdoor community faces some challenges in the coming years with the Missing Link and Manitou Incline projects (and many others) demanding our support. But challenge is good. Challenge is a gift and we get to choose what we do with it. It certainly beats the alternative ... no movement, no direction, apathy.
