Dear Boulder Marathon Runner,
I just received information from my contact at the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. The Boulder Marathon event scheduled for this weekend is 100% off. We're working on a re-schedule date - and this date will be one of the next several weekends. We do know that the race will not be
rescheduled for Sunday, September 26th. While we're looking at October 3rd, this date is not official and should not be treated as such.
The incident command post at the Boulder Reservoir will take several days to dismantle once the fires are completely out. I say "fires" because the command post is now also being used as a staging area to fight the Loveland fire which started yesterday...
I received dozens of emails from runners after yesterday's email announcement, and I want everyone to know how much our staff appreciates the outpouring of support for the Boulder community in this difficult time. Never before has Boulder County experienced a week like this, and the city and county have come together in an amazing way to help those
individuals who've been displaced by the fire.
One Boulder Marathon registrant was intending to fly in for the race this weekend, but the friend's house she was going to stay at burned down in the 4 Mile Fire. Emails of support have come in from all corners of the country, and I want to thank all of you for keeping a positive outlook on this, and especially for keeping this situation in it's proper perspective.
Once we have a reschedule date, we'll encourage our participants to bring items to donate to those who have been affected by the fire. We will attempt to collect a significant amount of donated items on race day - and our staff will commit to getting these donated items into the
hands of the displaced residents. Stay tuned for more information on this.
I expect to be able to announce the reschedule date soon. Between now and then I will continue to send daily email updates to all of our Boulder Marathon participants. Again, until both of these fires are 100% under control, we're in a holding pattern as far as a reschedule date.
Our staff continues to work hard preparing for the race, and we look forward to seeing you at the starting line.
Thanks for your time, and look for another email tomorrow...
Sincerely,
Jeff Mason
