The Leadville Trail 100 Ultra marathon began in 1983 as a running race to drive tourism in Leadville, and the MTB mountain bike race was added in 1994. The mountain bike race has grown in popularity among the world’s most elite cyclists with 1,400 competitors. The race takes place over a 100-mile course with cyclists climbing and descending 14,000 feet through extreme climate changes ranging from heat to hail and from rain to snow. For many, it will be the most difficult race of their lives. For some, a bragging right to say they raced alongside the best in the world. Some imagine victory, most hope only to finish, but everyone will count.
2009 Race Across the Sky" captured the imagination of countless mountain bike enthusiasts when Lance Armstrong not only won the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race, but set a new course record that seemed unattainable. This year, "Race Across the Sky 2010" delves into the resulting race entry boom, including record numbers of citizen riders, along with those aspiring Leadmen and Leadwomen who go beyond this one-day cycling event to conquer merciless running races during their ambitious five- race endeavor. Each entrant brings their own personal reasons for challenging themselves to this epic test of will, strength and endurance. Joined by the toughest elite field this high-altitude century mountain bike race has ever seen, these riders are tested by one of the most brutal courses known to the sport. From the center of the little mining town of Leadville, Colorado, to the 12,570-foot top of Columbine Mine, get ready to be inspired all over again.
