Peter Maksimow took an early lead in the Cheyenne Mountain 25K on Saturday and ran most of the race by himself. But the competition he faced over the final, difficult meters was fierce ... and it was all in his head. Maksimow, 35, of Manitou Springs, had won the race twice before and held the course record of 1 hour, 46 minutes and 5 seconds. Charging toward the finish line, he knew a new record was possible and he forced the last bit of speed from his tired legs.
Tick, tick, tick ... finish...1:46:03. Race record.
Travis Macy (31, Evergreen) was second in 1:54:14, followed by Brett Wilson (29, Durango) in 1:54:49.
Competing in her first trail race, Shanie Mulligan (34, Eagle County) was the fastest among the women. Mulligan clocked 2:11:16, though she is more famous for riding a mountain bike. She finished ninth at the 2013 Leadville 100. Michelle Wilson (29, Durango) finished second in 2:18:32, followed by Sydney Cornell (43, Parker) in 2:26:42.
