Here is a great piece about why the Manitou Incline must be fixed.
While there have been 216,000 trips up the Incline recorded in the last 11 months, the big problem is soil erosion caused by rainfall and gravity.
"Once it starts to open up like that, like it has been, it just gets worse a lot quicker," said Don Jacobs, a civil engineer who has worked to create a plan for fixing the problem. "It's important, I think, that we get on it this summer."
The Incline will be closed for repairs from August through November of this year.
