Leroy Popowski bolted to the lead and was never challenged in the first Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb race on Saturday, July 14. Popowski charged up the Pikes Peak Highway to finish on the summit of 14,115-foot Pikes Peak in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 36.8 seconds. The course gained 4,700 feet over 12.4 miles. Though the event has been held in each of the last three years, 2012 marks the first time race organizers included a bike race.
