Joe Gray heard the footsteps behind him. Catching him. And that rarely happens. With about two miles to run in the Barr Trail Mountain Race, he had one choice. Drop the hammer. And that decision lead to a new course record of 1 hour, 28 minutes, 34 seconds.
"It's tough to go for the record here because of the (foot) traffic, and typically when I come here I don't want to get hurt. So on the descent I'm not trying to do anything crazy. But this year I heard somebody behind me, and I think it was a guy coming off the incline. So I was like, man, somebody reeled me in. So I'm sure that he probably helped me get about 30 seconds, whoever that guy was."
