Gerald "The G Man" Romero is good when it comes to running up hills, and he's great coming down them. That formula worked for him on Saturday in the Run to the Shrine 10K at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Romero ran conservatively for the first two miles, but when the course hit it's steepest pitches - right around the elephant exhibit - the 42-year-old Colorado Springs resident made his move. He hit the race high point - the Will Rogers Shrine - after 1,400 feet of climing, then charged back to the finish at the zoo to take the win in 43 minutes, 26 seconds.
It was a good day for the masters runners, with 42-year-old Wes Thurman (Colorado Springs), placing second 44:24. Nathan Swartzendru (29, Monument) was third in 47:25.
Laura Keaton, 26, of Manitou Springs was the fastest among the women, winning in 55:33. Check out http://www.pikespeaksports.us/ for more video, blogs, photos and stories about running and cycling in the Pikes Peak Region.
