Hats off to Steve Vaughan and Bicycle Village for putting on a great Race Day Clinic for the Triathlon community in Colorado Springs. There were approximately 20 people in attendance including many members of the Pikes Peak Triathlon Club.
We are certainly fortunate to have sponsors who provide true value-adds to the businesses they run. Bicycle Village has for years been giving back to this community and one way in particular is through their clinics and classes they host both on a weekly basis and sport-specific like today.
This clinic was particularly interesting to me as I have become well acquainted with Steve over the past year. He's got a great story to go along with his love for triathlon and as a USAT Certified Triathlon Coach, he brings a wealth of ideas and tips. In addition to being a coach, he is also a bike-fit pro. In fact, I spent last Tuesday evening with him as we tweaked my Felt and todays long pull of 50 miles gave me an opportunity to put our small changes into action.
Today's clinic focused on the "It's race day, now what?". That is, the nuts and bolts of race day. The What, When, Why, Where and How of the day from start to finish.
Steve covered everything from the preparation and items to bring to the race, along with tips for setting up your tranisition area, how to approach the swim, energy balance, transition tips and fueling. I took away a couple of smart ideas that I will incorporate next weekend at the Tri The Creek Sprint including: 1) proper hydration while on the bike, and 2) grab a set of ear plugs for the swim in 50 degree water.
Another cool thing about having the clinic at Bicycle Village is the opportunity it provides to check out all the cool new gear.
Thanks again Steve and Thanks to Bicycle Village for hosting us.
