Among the many other reasons, Colorado Mountain Bike racing is great because it happens in the summer. I know this may seem like a Duh, but there are many parts of our fair country that do not race bikes in the summer. It is too hot, the spider webs are too bad, or it rains too much are some of the reasons that force racing into the spring or late fall. But summer is good.  And I could argue it’s the greatest season of all. Mountain bike racing is good.  And I could argue it’s the greatest sport of all. It is June and summer is officially here, with it comes Wednesday night racing and the local Sand Creek Series. Mountain bike racing, summer time and the living’s easy.

I remember a rendezvous with riding buddies from the Bear Creek parking lot this winter. It was cold, a little over 20 degrees, and it had already been dark for two hours before we were scheduled to meet up for a trail ride. That is NOT easy living. I had about 15 lbs of clothes on and was carrying enough lumens of light to land an airplane. Now at that same time in the evening we are going to be hanging out with even more riding buddies and tearing up laps of Bear Creek, taking bottle hand-ups, and having a cheering squad. I’ll take it!

For most of us the season has been underway for quite some time now. Even if this is not our A race for the year, I have seen much of the Sand Creek family out and about at the various early season events. I got to say I have been pretty proud of Colorado Springs. Our local racers have been representing on the National and World scene and just a few weeks ago at the Growler in Gunny, COS crushed everyone in the points competition that tallies up podium finishes and ranks each town accordingly. I am thrilled to report that Boulder was light-years behind us. But even though we are out racing bikes already-- now is when the season begins. It is all dress rehearsals up till this point. Now it is summer and race season.

Wednesday, June 6th is the first race in the Sand Creek Series. You can’t do a series if you do not do the first race. So I do not care what you had planned or who is visiting from out of town or how much you have not been riding, none of that matters. You are a Mountain biker in the greatest state for the sport and this is your local series and this is priority number 1! See you on the start line.
