Longmont Chimes in for ROLL 2011
The City of Longmont is a great place to race. With a well developed trails system, a thriving art community, and an active cycling community, it's the home of the Longmont Twin Peaks Tri. The longest running triathlon in the United States, Twin Peaks hosted its first tri in 1980.
Lauren Greenfield, the Director of Art In Public Places (AIPP) for the City of Longmont, has coordinated with ROLL in 2011. Longmont youth do not have access to a large number of repurposed bike wheels, so ROLL brought 30 wheels to Longmont, donated by Colorado Springs' "Bike Clinic Too." Lauren organized a "Decorate Bike Wheels" Clinic and made beautiful and functional windchimes with Longmont youth. Photos by Ildiko Varga.
The City of Longmont is lending AIPP's Bike Wheel Windchimes to the ROLL Festival during its many activities this year. ROLL Festival events include the Kids On Bikes Festival, America the Beautiful Park, 11 AM - 4 PM, Sunday, August 21; the People's Pedal Party, Downtown Colorado Springs, 4 PM - 8 PM, Sunday, August 21; ROLL Bike Art Exhibit, Venue 515, August 26 - October 2; and Bike-In Movie Night, Venue 515, Sunday, August 28.
On a serious note, ROLL will have a private performance at opening night for the "Mary Hoyle Memorial." Local Guitarist Sarah Musick has composed a tune, "Deliberately," dedicated to Mary. Sarah will play for a small audience and sing her song Friday, August 26, at 7 PM. Those who would like to dedicate a moment of silence to Ms. Hoyle's memory will have a quiet space to gather. For more information, call Amy at 471-ROLL.
