After over eighteen years of training for endurance events I finally had my first overtraining/repetitive motion injury this year. It is plantar fasciitis and boy does it hurt, it feels as if you have knives stuck in the bottom of your feet and when you get out of bed in the morning you can hardly step for the first few minutes. I have always incorporated a large amount of elevation gain in my weekly training regimine, but this year I also added teaching group fitness classes that utilize cardio circuits and coaching my son's soccer team. Both have added a lot of lateral movement that I probably am not used to, and did not properly train for. I have a couple of clients that suffer from this as well, so to answer their questions and anyone else reading this that is wondering how to treat it, this is the recommendation from a friend of mine that is a physical therapist. Plantar fasciitis is a result of the fascia of the foot becoming irritated and inflamed, so taking an anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen helps the pain and the inflamation. Icing the foot three to five times a day and using a foot roller is the next step. Finally purchasing and sleeping in a Strassburg sock does wonders. This ailment can take weeks to months to feel better, but following these steps helps to get you going a lot quicker. (As a disclaimer I am not diagnosing or prescribing treatment to or for anyone, just giving some advice on what I have used to treat my fasciitis) Below is a picture of a Strassburg sock, this and the foot massager can be purchased at many of our local running stores.
