Crazy Legs,

After I completed the Chicago Marathon I notice my toenails were black? What causes this and how can I prevent it from happening?

Jason

Jason,

Recent trauma to your toe may have caused the toenail to become black. This is because it is bruised and blood has gathered under the nail. Some causes of black toenails can be wearing no socks, having too thick of a sock or having shoes that are too tight.

Crazy Legs,

What does it mean to "DNF" in a race? And why is it such a bad thing?

Brad

Brad,

DNF means a runner “Did Not Finish” the event. There can be many reasons why this occurs from improper training, weather conditions or injury. Some individuals believe this a worst thing in world but as a coach I think a DNF is a reminder we all have good and bad races. It is what you do after the DNF that is important. You need to adjust your training and race preparation so it will not occur again.

highlander, thanks for input. I forgot to mention minimalist/running barefoot. --- Crazy Legs

In my experience most all shoes are made "last" shaped, not foot shaped. I run in Luna sandals and have never had a black toe. You may want to consider looking into minimalist footwear/running barefoot.
