The Incline Friends group is asking for volunteers to help with a trail project beginning at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 5.
Volunteers will help reroute the short social trail that begins at the Barr Trail parking lot and descends across the hillside above Ruxton Ave., ending at the base of the Incline.
Those interested should plan to meet in the Barr Trail Parking lot.
"There is a lot of work to be done and much of it will have to be done by contract, such as the repair of ties higher on the Incline, but this trail segment is something that we can do with the help of volunteers," Incline Friends chairman Steve Bremner said.
Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services staff members have set a new route for the trail, which is included in the Manitou Incline Site Development and Management Plan.
Trails, Open Space & Parks director Sarah Bryarly said some trail reclamation work will also be done.
The workday is an important step in the process of legalizing use of the Incline. While citizen volunteers have organized successful clean-up days and made repairs to loose railroad ties, no official work has been done.
Creation of the Incline Friends group - which will soon become a nonprofit organization - was required in the Incline Management Plan. The group is responsible for education and outreach, as well as fund raising and volunteer coordination.
"This small bit of actual work towards reaching our goal of a safe and sustainable Incline is a milestone," Bremner said. "I can visualize what success looks like now."
Bryarly said it's possible that the work can be completed in a day.
Those who wish to help should dress for the weather, bring work gloves, plenty of water and pack a lunch.
