Gerald Romero showed that he still has plenty of speed in his 40-year-old legs Saturday at the Running for Rachael Brain Booster 5K at the Air Force Academy.

With the finish line in site, Romero and Michael Stephens ran shoulder to shoulder and settled the race with a 100 meter sprint.

It was Romero's first win of 2012. His time of 19 minutes, 28 seconds wasn't his best, but the event's new course, which looped around the field house, contained some tough hills.

"I'm happy with my time for this time of the season," Romero said. "It was was a slow course. Those hills were tough."

A UCCS student, Kendrick runs for the fun of it.

"It was a really nice morning," she said. "I loved it. Coming out for a good cause, too. The hills were tough, but the downhill made up for it."

Amanda Hodges (25:23) finished second in the women's race, followed by Lori Michalak (25:27) and Donna Garcia (25:32).

In the men's race, Stephens finished in 19:47. Benjamin Thomas (21:10) was third, with Michael Guenther (22:32) and Jaosn Morgan (23:01) rounding out the top five.

The event is held each in year in memory of Rachael Newton who at age 14 lost her life to brain cancer. Read more about Rachael and the Rachael's Ribbons of Hope Foundatio...
