You see them every day of the week, striding through the morning's thin light or racing home in the dark. They shuffle along the hiking trails of our parks and our highest mountains. They sprint to the finish line in our weekend races.

The Pikes Peak Region's runners are talented and interesting people. From elite-level athletes, to soccer moms sneaking a quick run before school, they're dedicated to the sport and they help make our community a healthful and fun place to live.

Gary and Linda Staines, fomer Olympians who now own the Runners Roost in Colorado Springs, appreciate the efforts of the area's runners. Next week they'll recognize the first Runners Roost Runner of the Month.

"We thought it would be good to look at the community and shine the spotlight on a runner who is doing extraordinary things," Gary Staines said. "There are many runners here who deserve some credit but never get it."

Runners Roost is teaming up wth Mizuno to offer a free pair of shoes to the Runners Roost Runner of the Month.

Who will earn this monthly honor? It's not all about the fastest runners, though they'll certainly be in the mix. The Runners Roost Runner of the Month will also be the determined 54-year-old who wins his age group, or perhaps a new runner who sets her personal best in the 5K.
