Everything was going as planned for Ellie Keyser who took an early lead in the Rock Canyon Half Marathon on Saturday in Pueblo.
But as she made the turn for home on the Arkansas River Trail near Pueblo Reservoir, she slammed face-first into an frigid wind that nearly knocked her backward.
"That wind was bad," Keyser said. "It really slowed me down."
Keyser held on to win the women's race in 1 hour, 23 minutes, 13.7 seconds -  and it was her first half marathon. A senior at Colorado State University, she recently finished her final college cross country season.
"My coach said I should find a half marathon, so I chose this one," she said. "It was cold, but I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out."
The cold weather didn't keep the runners away. A light snow fell as about 650 started on the icy streets of Pueblo City Park. The sun poked through the clouds later in the day, but did little to temper the wind chill.
Tracy Thelen of Colorado Springs was the second-place woman (27th overall), running home in 1:29:30.4.
Nearly all of the top runners finished with survival stories.
"Oh, that wind was terrible," said Rochelle Persson, 44, who won the women's masters race in 1:30:21.8 and placed 32nd overall.
Pete Maksimow of Manitou Springs placed second in 1:15:39.5, but said he had a bad day.
"I was going OK through six miles, then my legs just didn't want to run," he said. "It was slippery wand windy. It seemed like it was blowing about 40 mph. You just had to put your head down and run into it. But it slowed us down to a crawl."
Daniel Nally, 26, of Denver, was the fastest of all, winning in 1:12:44.3. Troy French, who recently moved to Colorado Springs was third in 1:15:52.
Neal Oseland, 42 of Colorado Springs, snagged the men's masters title in 1:21:23. He was fourth overall.
