There were many age-group winners from Colorado Springs in Saturday's Rock Canyon Half Marathon in Pueblo. But the biggest performance was turned in by 22-year-old newcomer James Burns, who won with a time of 1:13:21 (5:36 per mile).
Burns recently moved to Colorado Springs and is training to become a professional triathlete. He seems to have the running part of the plan in place.
"This is my first race at altitude, I was just using it as a training run," he said.
The fastest woman on the course was Stephanie Jones, 40, of Colorado Springs. However, the race filled before she could enter and she was not credited with an official time. Jones, who placed second this year in the Leadville 100, said she ran about 1:28.
Laura Mortimer, of Denver, was the official women's winner, clocking 1:30:35. Air Force cadet Caitlin Lynch, 23, placed second in 1:30:40. Stephanie Meredith, 28, of Colorado Springs was third in 1:31:26.
Burns recently graduated from George Mason University in Washington D.C. where he ran cross country and track. He said he wanted to see if his legs and lungs could take him places before searching for a job.
"I'd like to get into the Olympic development program," Burns said.
His performance on Saturday should gain some attention. He charged off the finish line and had built a 30-second lead in the first two miles.
Michael Cernoia, 18, of Pueblo West, was second overall in 1:16:22. Devin Rourke, 24, of Boulder was third in 1:18:00.
