Once she got used to the pain of running up and down the rocky trails in Palmer Park, Regina Hammond was able to have a little fun.

She had tried for three years to win the Pikes Peak Road Runners' Fall Series overall women's title. On Sunday, it was mission accomplished.

"It was good, this is my favorite course," Hammond said. "I live right off of it, so I train here most of the time during the week and it never ceases to amaze me how much it hurts."

Hammond, a coach with TriSmarter.com, placed second on Sunday, covering the 7.5-mile course in 1 hour and 4 minutes to claim the title.

The Colorado Running Company's Amanda Ewing won two of the four races in the series, inclduing Sunday's Finale. Ewing finished in 1:02:17.

"Luckily, Amanda didn't do every race or she would have been on top," Hammond said. "But it's good to finally win the series."

One of the best young - really young - runners in the city, Kayli Tabares (top right), 12, wrapped up the series with a third place finish in Palme Park (1:04:18) and was third in the series.

Colorado Running Company/Inov-8 runner Alex Nichols (26, Colorado Springs) won three series races to take the men's title. He charged to the win in Sunday in 47 minutes, 48 seconds. Pete Maksimow (32, Manitou Springs) was second in 48:21, followed by Sandu Rebenciuc (42, Colorado Springs) in 48:39.

Maksimow was second in the series, Justin Ricks (31, Pueblo West) was third.
