Fort Carson soldier Robert Cheseret charged to a third-place finish in the presdigious Army 10-miler Sunday in Washington D.C., leading his all-Army team to the team championship.

Cheseret covered the distance in 48 minutes, 20 seconds.

John Mickowski, who is also stationed at Fort Carson, placed 10th in 49:40.

Some 30,000 runners entered the race. Colorado Springs runners made an impact, placing seven in the top 83.

One of the best performances by a local runner belonged to Army Cpt. Kelly Calway of Manitou Springs. Calway finished second in the women's race and 83rd overall with a time of 57:20.

Calway spoke with Stars and Stripes after the race. The following is an exerpt from the Stars and Stripes article: “I feel great. I feel fantastic,” said Calway, who is stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. “It is everything I dreamed of and more.”

She added that her husband is in Afghanistan right now, but he was cheering for her from afar. “I heard him during the race,” she said.

Calway said the last hill was difficult, but she was inspired to keep going by one of her friends who recently lost his legs in Afghanistan.

“I was running for him,” she said. “My legs were hurting, but not nearly as much as he was. I was thinking about him during that race, and every time I thought it sucked, I pushed harder.”

Aziza Abate of Ellicott City, Md., won the women's race in 55:54.

Colorado Springs-area runners Michelle Kelly placed 15th with a time of 1:01:47 and Elizabeth Helland was 22nd in 1:02:30.

In the men's race Colorado Springs' Darin Shearer placed 22nd in 51:58, followed by  Nate Pennington (23rd, 51:59), Troy Harrison (31st, 53:22), Matt Petrocci (58th, 55:34) and Stephen Phillips (87th, 57:32).
