Jay Luna won the Fountain Valley 5K for the Fallen for the second-consecutive year on Saturday (Sept. 3) at Widefield High School.
Luna, a former Fountain-Fort Carson High School and Colorado State University runner, battled a fierce northern wind to win in 17 minutes, 4 seconds.
Nancy Hobbs, the Executive Director of the American Trail Running Association, won the women's race in 23:17.
Now in it's third year, the race has become a celebration of courage and honor for Fountain Valley runners who gather to remember the community's military men and women who died while defending their country.
Race director Susan Arnold lost her son, Spc. Ronnie James Tucker, on April 30, 2008. She started the 5K for the Fallen in 2009.
"I started the race because there are so many moms (who lost sons and daughters) in this town," she said.
The race is a fundraiser for the Junior ROTC programs at Fountain Fort-Carson, Widefield and Mesa Ridge High Schools.
