Two races on the schedule for Oct. 1 and 2 will offer something for everyone. The Grand Prix of Running series wraps up on Saturday with the Great Pumpkin 5K and 10K Races. And the Pikes Peak Road Runners Fall Series begins on Sunday with the famous run through Monument Creek.

The Great Pumpkin Runs begin at 8:30 a.m. down on Venetucci Farm. Online registration has closed, but runners can still register at the Runner's Roost (121 N. Tejon St.), on Friday (Sept. 30), or on the morning of the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. Registration fee is $30.

The courses are flat and fun, winding through the corn fields and past the farm's pig pens.

Directions to Venetucci Farm: Take I-25 to Exit 135 (South Academy Blvd). Go east for ½ mile and take the exit for Highway 85 toward Fountain. Turn right on Highway 85 and go 0.9 miles and look for the farm on your right. Parking is located at St. Dominic's Church,1/4 mile south of Venetucci Farm.

Following the Great Pumpkin Run is The Little Pumpkin Fun Run, which is open to children 10 and under. ($5 Entry Fee)

The Great Pumpkin Run is a fundraiser for the Pikes Peak Community Foundation.

On Sunday, the 3.5-mile Fall Series Race No. 1 starts at 11:30 a.m. in Monument Valley Park.

Online registration has closed, but runners can register for the four-race series, or individual races, until 1 p.m. Oct. 1 (Saturday) at the Boulder Running Company (3659 Austin Bluffs Parkway), the Colorado Running Company (833 N. Tejon), and at Runner's Roost (121 N. Tejon.)

There really is nothing like the Fall Series, thanks largely to the "creative" mind of longtime race director Larry Miller who designs the courses. From the Pikes Peak Road Runners website: "The running community is certain that Larry lays awake at night thinking of new twists for the Fall Series courses.  There have been hay bale jumps, fence climbing, culvert tunnels and more.  And because of all of this, we all have a treasure chest full of Fall Series war stories to pass along.  Thank you, Larry!"

The first race is famous for it's final mile, which includes a long stretch of running in Monument Creek. Wear a pair of older shoes. Veterans of this race insist that you'll want to throw them out when you're finished. And bring clean socks and shoes to change into afterward.
