Eleven miles wasn't enough for Tera Moody, the 30 year old Boulder Running Company/adidas runner. No, she needed 10 more. So she jumped into the Grand Prix of Running Top Ten Mile race Saturday in Colorado Springs and won with a time of 56 minutes, 52 seconds.
"That felt really good," she said. "I had already ran 11 miles before the start of the race, so I'm really happy."
The race began at the Grace Athletic Center near the University of Colorado/Colorado Springs and finished at Colorado College. It was Moody's second consecutive win on the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail. She won the Classic 10K two weeks ago. Now, she goes for bigger game. Moody will run the marathon at the World Track and Field Championships, Aug. 27 in Daegu, Korea.
Grand Prix of Running long series leader Christie Foster finished second in 1:01:59, while 2010 long-series champ Stephanie Meredith placed third in 1:07:18.
In the men's race, Alex Nichols, 26, of Colorado Springs, won with a time of 54:30.81. James Burns, 23, Colorado Springs, was second in 55:36.15, followed by Jarret Leblanc, 20, Hathaway, La., in 55:45.59.
Nichols has put in some tough trail miles in preparation for the Pikes Peak Ascent on Aug. 20
"I didn't have fresh legs by any means, so it was a good workout," he said.
About the time Nichols is charging up the side of Pikes Peak, Moody will be dialing in her taper for the world championships. She'll spend the next 10 days training in Florida's heat and humidity, preparing for Korea's sweltering climate.
"It's going to be hot and humid," she said. "It will make the times slow, so we'll all be running for place."
Moody ran a personal best 2:30:53 at the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October. That effort earned her a spot on the U.S. team along with 2004 Olympic marathoner Colleen De Reuck of Boulder. They'll be joined by Kara Goucher of Portland, Ore., who finished fifth at the Boston Marathon this year, plus Kathy Newberry (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Alissa McKaig (Blowing Rock, N.C.) who finished third and fifth at the U.S. women's marathon championships last fall.
The Top 10, which was contested for just the second year, was the fifth of six Grand Prix of Running Series. The final series event, the Great Pumpkin 5K and 10K, is slated for Oct. 1 at Venetucci Farm.
