Manitou Springs' Peter Maksimow finished 20th in a field of about 54,000 runners on Monday in the 2011 BolderBoulder 10K. He was the fastest of all the Pikes Peak-area runners in the race.
Maksimow turned in a time of 33 minutes, 26.03 seconds on a new course that started on a slight uphill grade.
"I was a little slower this year," Maksimow said. "I was 14 seconds off of last year on the first mile split. But the best part is just coming up here and competing in a great race."

Colorado Springs runners Pat McGuire (34:17:31) and the Boulder Running Company's Andy Rinnee (35:14:44, pictured at right) placed 35th and 57th respectively.

Clerc Koenck of Colorado Springs was the eighth-fastest woman in the race and 151st overall. She hit the finish line at Folsom Field in 37:07.07.

Ashlee Nelson (below with David Bieda), the defending Triple Crown champion who runs for the Colorado Running Company, was the second-best woman from the area (36th among all women, and 464th overall) in 39:58.47. Colorado Springs' Daniell Kehoe clocked a 40:18.07. She was 43rd among all women and 510th overall.

Colorado State University alum Jeremy Freed won the citizen's race in 30:27. He pulled away from the lead pack with four miles to run and was alone when he motored into Folsom Field.

"I knew I was a talented runner, I just never had the chance to prove it," Freed said.

Japan's Akane Mutazaki topped the women's field with a time of 36:09.

In the men's elite race, Belete Assefa of Ethiopia won with a time of 29:22.56.
Lineth Chepkirui of Kenya won the women's race in 32:29.79.
The USA men's team of James Carney, Ryan Hall and Aaron Braun finished third to the Ethiopia and Kenya.
Carney, of Boulder, was the first American to finish. He placed fifth in 30:16:15.

"It really means a lot to run into this stadium as the top American," Carney said.

Hall, whose 2011 Boston Marathon time of 2:04:58 was the best ever by an American runner, was seventh in 30:29:33. He had hoped for more, but said the altitude caught up with him.

"The first mile felt really good, but just gradually, my breathing, my chest ... I was really working hard out there," Hall said.

The USA women's team of Amy Hastings, Renee Metivier-Baillie and Magdalena Lewy-Boulet was second to Ethiopia.

Hastings, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., was first across the line for the Americans, placing fourth in 34:19:10.
