It was day for smashing records at the Rocky Mountain State Games 5K. The looping course that encircled Prospect Lake served up 21 new race records, including the men's and women's overall and the masters' standards.

Carl Arnold, 24, of Colorado Springs, was the fastest of all, charging to the win in 15 minutes, 50 seconds, beating the old course record of 16:03 set in 2010 by Luke Arbuckle.

In the women's race, 17-year-old Heather Bates crushed her old course record by 33 seconds. She finished in 17:34.

Bates is a two-time Class 4A Colorado state track champion in the 3,200-meter run. She came to the race with a goal of breaking 18 minutes.

"I really wanted to break 18 today because I almost did it two years ago," Bates said. "I didn't get to run last year because I was injured, so I was happy to come out here and improve quite a bit."

Bates was recently selected to the 2012 US Junior Mountain Running Team. She'll compete in the World Mountain Running Championships on Sept. 2 in Italy.

"I've always wanted to run for Team USA, so I can't wait," she said. "I've been focusing more on hill training than 5K training, I think it's helping, obviously."
