Sand Creek Sports returns to its roots with five Wednesdays of mountain bike racing in 2012

Sand Creek Sports is going back to the future in 2012.

When Andy and Kathleen Bohlmann launched the Sand Creek Cycling Series  in 1993, they offered grass-roots racing at familiar local venues. And the riders came to play.

This year's schedule is much like the old days, with five Wednesday evening races - the Ascent Cycling Series - scattered across the summer, plus the ProCycling Classic set for July 1.

There were only two Wednesday night races last summer, and both drew about 120 racers. Bohlmann said the feedback from riders was pretty consistent.

"Everybody wanted more Wednesday races, so that's what we're going to do," Bohlmann said."This is exactly what we used to do, so we're going back. I'm trying to get small."

Ascent Cycling has taken the lead again as title sponsor of the Wednesday races. And there will be a new venue on Wednesday. The series will run on three nights at Bear Creek Terrace and twice at Palmer Park. Race dates are: June 6, Bear Creek; June 13, Palmer Park; July 18, Bear Creek Terrace; July 25, Palmer Park; Aug. 8, Bear Creek.

In addition, Sand Creek Sports and Bruce McGrew at ProCycling are working together on the ProCycling Classic, set for July 1 at Palmer Park. The race will be toned-down version of last September's ProCycling Palmer Park 50. Bohlmann's race crew will design a course with a 5-mile lap, with total race distances similar to other cross country races.

Borriello Brothers is bringing the pizza, compliments of new Sand Creek Sports sponsor Pikes Peak Velo. And Bohlmann is adding a Kids On Bikes event.

And Sand Creek Sports is teaming up with PikesPeakSports.us to form a two-person cycling team. One spot is filled, but team organizers still need a female rider. Each team member will receive free entry to all Sand Creek races, plus $100 cash and the new team jersey. E-mail tim.bergsten@gmail.com for more info.

Most of the heavy work in organizing the races has been completed. Bohlmann has filled staff positions with experienced hands, including Tom Vinson, venue director; Roland Hawkins, chief course marshal; Brian Linthicam, Palmer Park course liaison; and race officials Bruce Neal, Andy McCord and Debbie Vinson.

Bohlmann's son Matthew will fill in as assistant race director, son Philip will design the poster and the new Sand Creek Sports/PikesPeakSports.us team jersey. PikesPeakSports.us site manager Tim Bergsten will serve as media director, and Amy Seltzer will carry a big stick as parking boss.

In addition to Pikes Peak Velo, The O'Boyle Groups Real Estate and Insurance have joined the sponsorship family.
